The Chilcotin Cup: A Legacy Honored
The history of Chilcotin Kennels (1968–Present)
The Story Behind the Name
The story of Chilcotin Kennels began in 1963 with Rose and Roy Singleton’s first Standard Smooth, Prince Clipper. By 1968, the "Chilcotin" prefix was officially registered—a name chosen to honor Rose’s heritage as one-quarter Chilcotin Indigenous.
For decades, Rose and Roy dedicated themselves to the breed, establishing a line known for its elegance and power. While naming themes have evolved over the years to remain respectful of Indigenous cultures, the heart of the program remains rooted in the lessons Rose & Roy passed down to their protégés.
"Rose always told me that a stellar bitch is the heart of a breeding program. You can breed a great bitch to a mediocre dog and see success, but a weak bitch line will set you back years. Those words stick with me even to this day."
— Shannon Scheer
Mentorship and Success
In the early 1980s, a sixteen-year-old Shannon Scheer was invited by Rose to handle for them. This partnership blossomed into a lifelong mentorship. Shannon eventually took over the breeding program, later joined by her sister, Alana Smith, as co-breeder in 2003.
The Chilcotin legacy is defined by legendary Dachshunds that dominated the rings across North America:
-
Am Can Ch Chilcotin’s Willow The Wisp (Emily): The #10 Hound in 1991 and a multi-Best In Show winner.
-
Am Can Ch Valona’s Shaman (Buddy): A descendant of the Chilcotin line who earned 10 BIS and over 100 Group firsts.
-
Am Can Ch Chilcotin’s Rose Royce (Blossom): A powerhouse who broke previous records, ranking as the #4 Hound in Canada.
